Brick Is Not One Material. It Is a Hundred.

Ask someone what they think of brick, and they will picture one thing. The brick they grew up with. The brick on the street they know best.

What they are picturing is a single point on a spectrum that runs from cream to almost black, from glassy and smooth to rough and irregular, from a traditional stretcher bond on a Federation cottage to a contemporary stack bond on a board-formed concrete and glass extension. The colour, texture, bond pattern, mortar, and detailing of brick can be varied so independently: and combined so deliberately, that the word "brick" almost needs a second conversation before it means anything at all.

This is not a background material. Used with conviction and on mass, brick is one of the boldest decisions a designer can make. That commitment is exactly what makes it work.

Colour

Brick colour comes from three things: the clay it is made from, the firing temperature, and the kiln atmosphere.

Cream and buff bricks, common in Adelaide's older character homes, were typically fired from the local clay of the Adelaide Plains, producing a warm, sandy tone that sits well against the pale limestone render of heritage streetscapes. Darker reds and ochres come from higher iron content in the clay. Near-black charcoal bricks: increasingly used in contemporary residential work, are fired at extreme temperatures or reduced in oxygen, producing a surface that is almost vitrified, dense and absorptive of light.

Within those broad families, the variation is remarkable. A cream brick in morning winter light reads completely differently by mid-afternoon. The same bond pattern in a warm terracotta reads as heritage in one context and deliberately contemporary in another. Colour in brickwork is never static, it is a relationship between the material, the light, and what surrounds it.

Texture

Texture is the quality of the brick face, how the surface is formed and finished before firing.

A smooth pressed face is dense and even, with a slight sheen where the clay was compressed against the mould. It reads as crisp and controlled, catches light differently at each hour of the day, and tends toward a more modern aesthetic.

Sandstock bricks are formed by pressing clay into sand-dusted moulds, leaving an irregular, slightly grainy surface. This is the texture you see on most of Adelaide's heritage character homes: familiar, warm, and highly responsive to raking light. The irregularity gives a wall life and movement that a perfectly uniform face cannot.

Tumbled bricks are mechanically aged, rolled to chip and round the corners, producing a surface that reads as already weathered, already settled. Used carefully, tumbled bricks can feel genuinely considered. Used carelessly, they become a shortcut to a rusticity that isn't earned.

Rough face and split face bricks are formed by splitting the brick along its length, exposing the raw interior. The result is textural and dramatic, almost geological in quality. Used on mass in a contemporary context, it can be extraordinary.

Bond patterns

Bond pattern is the arrangement of bricks in the wall, and it changes everything about how a surface reads.

Stretcher bond, the standard, runs bricks horizontally with each course offset by half a brick. It is so ubiquitous as to be almost invisible, which is sometimes exactly right.

Flemish bond alternates headers (bricks laid with their short end facing out) and stretchers within each course, creating a regular diamond rhythm across the face of the wall. It is the bond of choice in much of Adelaide's Victorian and Federation residential heritage.

Stack bond aligns all vertical joints, creating a grid rather than an interlocked pattern. Structurally it requires reinforcement; aesthetically it reads as contemporary and deliberate, particularly effective when paired with a flush mortar joint.

Soldier and header courses, bricks standing on their long edge or laid as headers, appear as accent bands within a wall, as window sill details, or as the defining element of a parapet. A single soldier course at the top of an opening changes the character of a window entirely.

Beyond these, there are patterns that move brick from enclosure into something closer to craft.

Hit and miss bond leaves deliberate voids within the wall, alternating solid bricks with open gaps in the same course. The result is a permeable screen: light passes through, air moves, the wall is simultaneously solid and open. Used in garden walls, boundary screens, and entry enclosures, it filters rather than blocks. The pattern of light and shadow it throws onto the ground is part of the design.

Dogtooth or sawtooth bond rotates bricks to 45 degrees so their corners project forward from the face, creating a deeply serrated relief that casts sharp triangular shadows in sunlight. It rewards raking light and loses its reading on flat, overcast days: which makes orientation on a facade a genuine design decision, not an afterthought.

Combined patterns, stretcher bond interrupted by bands of soldier course, or panels of stack bond set within a Flemish field, allow a single wall to carry multiple registers of rhythm and detail. Resolved well, the transitions feel authored. Resolved carelessly, they read as indecision.

Herringbone sets bricks at 45 degrees in a V-pattern. More common in floor paving and internal feature walls than external enclosing walls, but with a long tradition in hearth surrounds, garden beds, and entry courts where the detail is read at close range.

Corbelling uses each course projecting progressively forward from the one below to create a stepped, cantilevered profile, the formal language of traditional chimneys and sheltering eaves. In contemporary residential work, corbelling can form a parapet profile, a window hood, or a projecting seat wall that reads as a formal gesture rather than a structural necessity.

The choice of bond pattern is not a finishing decision. It shapes the visual weight, the rhythm, and the apparent scale of a building. Resolved early, it is a formal decision. Resolved late, it is decoration.

Mortar, colour, profile, and application

Mortar covers almost half the visible face of a brick wall. It is the most underestimated decision in brickwork, and one of the most expressive.

Colour is where most people begin. A charcoal or near-black mortar against a pale cream brick produces a high-contrast grid that reads as graphic and contemporary. The same cream brick with a matching buff mortar recedes, the joints almost disappear, and the wall reads as a continuous surface of colour and texture rather than a system of units. Neither is inherently right. Both are deliberate.

Joint profile determines shadow and depth. A flush joint, struck level with the face of the brick, creates a flat, continuous surface. A raked joint draws the mortar back from the face, cutting a shadow line between each brick that changes character through the day as the sun moves. A weathered joint angles the mortar to shed water, functional in origin but also a precise, linear quality of finish.

Beyond these, there are applications that move mortar into genuinely expressive territory.

A weeping or extruded joint deliberately allows mortar to be squeezed out from the joint and left, dripping, irregular, almost stalactite-like: rather than being struck back. Used on a curved or serpentine wall, where the mortar catches raking light and shadows shift across the protrusions, it produces one of the most visually alive finishes brickwork can achieve. It is the antithesis of a crisp contemporary joint: and in the right context, far more interesting.

A smudge or bag and rub finish applies mortar in a thin wash across the face of the brick, partially filling the texture and leaving a deliberately worn, imprecise quality. Distinct from full bagging: the brick face remains partially visible beneath the smear. It is the technique behind much of the aged-render look seen on older South Australian cottages, and it ages in a way that is genuinely beautiful.

Tuck pointing, a heritage masonry technique, uses two mortars: a background colour matched to the brick, then a thin raised ribbon of white or cream mortar applied precisely into the centre of each joint. At a distance it reads almost as a fine pencil line traced across the wall. Up close, it is meticulous craft. Used in careful conservation work on significant heritage homes.

Mortar colour, profile, and application technique are a single decision. They should be resolved together, in direct reference to the bond pattern, the brick texture, and the light the wall will receive.

Treatments: bagging and limewashing

Two treatments that are sometimes misunderstood, and often worth understanding properly.

Bagging involves applying a thin cement slurry over the face of laid brick, filling the texture partially or fully depending on technique. The result is a surface that retains the irregularity of the original brickwork beneath but becomes more uniform in tone. Bagged brick has a long tradition in South Australian residential architecture, it softens the formality of regular brick and reads well in both heritage and contemporary contexts when the underlying wall is well-laid.

Limewashing applies a diluted lime-based wash directly to the brick face. Unlike paint, it is breathable and semi-translucent, the texture of the brick remains visible beneath, and the tone varies slightly across the surface depending on absorption. Limewashed brick ages in a way that is genuinely beautiful: the coverage thins over time, the original colour re-emerges in places, and the wall accumulates patina rather than peeling. For an older home where the original brick is irregular or mixed in colour, limewashing can bring coherence while preserving character.

Both treatments are specific to context. Neither is a correction, when they are right, they are a considered choice.

Adelaide's brick heritage

Adelaide has its own brick story.

The Hawthorn brick, the dark, semi-vitrified clinker common to the inner suburbs of Adelaide's Victorian and Federation heritage areas, was produced from local clay and fired to a near-purple in places. It is the brick of Norwood verandah columns, of Unley garden walls, of the retaining structures and boundary fences that define Adelaide's older residential streets. It is irreplaceable in the heritage sense: genuinely aged, genuinely local, full of the variation that contemporary manufacture cannot reproduce.

Littlehampton Brick Co., in the Adelaide Hills, remains one of the few local manufacturers still producing handmade-quality bricks in South Australia. Their range sits within the warm buff and terracotta tradition of the region and carries the slight irregularity of a handmade product, a quality that becomes more evident and more valued at scale. For contemporary work that needs to feel grounded in place, locally made brick is a specific and considered choice.

Conviction on mass

Brick used timidly, as a feature panel, as a threshold detail, as a single accent wall: rarely succeeds. The material asks to be committed to. A home in which brick is used on mass, an entire facade, a continuous garden wall, an interior that carries the external material through: has a formal conviction that is immediately felt. The weight of it. The thermal presence of it. The way it anchors the building to its site.

That commitment is what makes brick bold. Not the colour, not the texture, not the bond pattern chosen: but the decision to use the material with the courage its scale demands.

A note on sustainability

Brick's sustainability case is quieter than some materials and more durable than most. Its thermal mass, the ability to absorb heat slowly and release it gradually, reduces the energy demand of a well-designed home in Adelaide's climate. A brick wall that receives winter sun during the day and radiates warmth through the evening is doing passive thermal work that cannot be replicated with a lightweight cladding. Its longevity, maintained brick walls last centuries, is an argument against replacement, and therefore against the embodied carbon cost of reconstruction. Locally made brick, from manufacturers like Littlehampton, reduces the transport component further.

Carefully detailed, not simply selected

Beautiful brickwork is not the result of choosing the right brick. It is the result of resolving the brick with the bond, the bond with the mortar, the mortar with the joint profile, and all of it with the light and context the wall will inhabit.

The specification sheet is the starting point. The detail drawing is where the material becomes architecture.
